Each motor controller has min cut off voltage and max working voltage.

For example:
48v Controller’s cut off at 40v. Less than 40v, not work.
36v Controller’s cut off at 30v. Less than 30v, not work.

For 48v electric bike motor kit system.We recommend reach set cut off voltage to over 42v by LCD. Less than 42v,should charge battery. It’s good for battery.

These days,all kinds of lithium batteries was made by 13 series connection or 14 series connection cells to be 48v, 52v.

Each cell – min about 2.8v , max about 4.2v
13 series – 4.2v x 13 = 54.6v
14 series – 4.2v x 14 = 58.8v

Overdischarge and overcharge both Not good for battery.
For example: if set it to 40v (controller’s cut off voltage is 40v)

2.8 x 14 = 39.2v (about 40v)

If 14 series connection cells ‘s min voltage to be 2.8v at the same time. That’s good.

But ride half a year, cut off voltage still 40v.
If No. one cell ‘s min voltage is 2.7v, second is 2.9v, third cell is 2.9v….
Total voltage is 40.4v ( 2.9 x 13 + 2.7v)

If first cell’s voltage to be 2.7v, it’s overdischarge, battery can’t to be charged. Battery is broken.
So we recommend charge battery when it reach about 42v or over.

If min 42v
No. one cell ‘s min voltage is 2.9v, second is 3.0v, third cell is 3.0v….
Total voltage is 41.9 v ( 3.0 x 13 + 2.9v)

New battery doesn’t have this issue. If ride 1-2 month, we recommend charge battery @ 42v or over.

For example: cell phone, only leave 20%,need to charge. If use out all that will break cells, also very hard to charge.

So we recommend set cut off voltage by LCD that over controller’s cut off voltage.

My name is philip young and I am reaching out as a representative of Eco Illinois SAE, a student organization at the University. As an organization under the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) umbrella, we design and build a car to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon and SAE Supermileage competitions each year. We attempt to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency and have achieved a school record of 1,137 mpg on gasoline at SAE Supermileage 2016.

Eco Illini SAE is comprised of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. From engineering to business students, the team focuses on providing environmentally conscious transportation solutions. To reach greater heights, the team is seeking to build a new car. The new car will incorporate lessons learned from past cars and be better suited to take advantage of new technologies. We pursue an aggressive vision for the future where the social cost of personal mobility is minimized. To further incorporate sustainable principles in society, we also participate in community outreach events and donate our old cars to other teams in order to encourage interest in sustainable engineering.

However, an undertaking of this size requires a lot of parts, funds, and time. One of our biggest roadblocks so far has been lacking the necessary resources to test and redesign the car for maximum efficiency. When you received leaf motor’s bike motor kit with the LCD motor controller .Don’t know how to handle it.
For example: 36V LCD motor controller
1. Power switch
Supply battery, press power switch once, the LCD panel will display total mileage, speed , battery capacity and the time (time will be recounted once the power is on).
Voltage ≥ 36V four cells
36V > Voltage ≥ 34.5V two cells
33V > Voltage ≥ 31.5V one cell (flash every 0.5 second)
Voltage < 31.5V no cells (flash every 0.5 second) 2. → Next button Users may adjust freely between different levels of assistant functions by this button. 3. Set button 3.1 Press set button once, “KM” light is on. At this status, the single mileage will be shown in this area. You may reset it by → button.; 3.2 Press “SET” one time under the status of single mileage, total mileage will be shown. Press it again , it will display single mileage; 3.3 Press “SET” for 5 seconds, the light is on. At this status, you may set with → the size of wheel diameter from 10inch to 30inch in speed display area. 3.4 Fault code Eight status of fault instruction from 01~05, 07~09 will be displayed in speed area when the light is flashing. 01: Abnormal connection between LCD screen and controller; 02: Excessive current is detected in controller. If the status remains the same after restarting, it is certain that something is wrong with the controller internal power devices. 03: Motor three-phase power lines are fallen off, or motor is stocked for more than 2 seconds. If the status remains the same after restarting, it is caused by undesirable contact of three-phase lines. 04: Battery is at the status of voltage protection; 05: Hall cables are not connected, or incorrectly connected. 07: It is wrong with the brake lever cable when system is running. 08: The controller internal current will detect if the circuit element is damaged. The status will be displayed if it is abnormal. 09: The battery voltage is measured all the time under the working state. If it is > 47V，the system will enter into high-voltage protection mode, stop working.

There are two types of hub motor wheels are used for e-bikes. One type is hub bldc motor , the other is brushed hub motor. Because the brushed motor had some disadvantage of high noise, shorter-use life, low efficiency..

These days hub bldc motor wheels are used for electric bikes widely and had replaced brushed hub motor.

So more and more motor controller are showed in market. For example: cruise brushless controller , regen brushless controller, programmable brushless controller, lcd bldc motor controller…

Convert a bike to an e-bike, we should choose a hub bldc motor wheel with brushless controller and throttle, brake lever,on/off switches,disk brake,front&rear lights,horn..etc accessories

European like 250w hub bldc motor and North America prefer 750w / 1000w bldc motor. How to purchase a good brushless controller to drive this bldc motor .

Generally 250w bldc motor need to be driven by 6-MOSFET brushless controller, and a 9-MOSFET motor controller dirves a 750w bldc motor,a 12-MOSFET brushless controller dirves a 1000w bldc motor.

Now nearly all types of brushless controller for e-bikes have cruise, alert, reverse, limited speed..etc. function.

If you buy 1 set 48V DIY kit, you had better to choose 48V 12-MOSFET/15-MOSFET brushless controller. Please don’t order 9-MOSFET motor controller to drive your 1000W brushless controller, it’s the heart of e-bike. 1000W bldc motor will bring larger current and high temperature, 9-MOSFET can’t afford.

For the bulk .of motor controller, larger, better. Larger bulk has better cool system.

In past, there was a guy sold regen motor controller, but nearly all sold regen controllers were broken in 30 days. Because when you brake, this regen controller will bring twice current to stop your e-bike, thus larger current would break MOSFET directly.

Now programmable controller is still showed in market. This brushless controller seem has nice face, but its head is small, can’t stuff more MOSFET. Use this brushless controller to drive 750w / 1000w bike system and break this nice face controller is normal. Don’t be arrest by programmable. You will find nothing for actual use when you use.

We have LCD cruise controller, more MOSFET, don’t worry your motor controller will be broken.
